Kuo: 12.9-Inch iPad Pro and 16-Inch MacBook Pro With Mini-LED Displays to Launch in Second Half of 2020

Apple is planning four to six products with mini-LED displays over the next two to three years, including a high-end 12.9-inch iPad Pro with an A14X chip in the third quarter of 2020 and a refreshed 16-inch MacBook Pro in the fourth quarter of 2020, according to well-known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

In a research note with TF International Securities today, obtained by MacRumors, Kuo said the mini-LED displays will “significantly improve productivity and the entertainment experience” without elaborating.

LG Display and GIS will be the most significant benefactors of these mini-LED products starting next year, according to Kuo.

Kuo has previously said that Mini-LED displays will allow for thinner and lighter product designs, while offering many of the same benefits of OLED displays used on the latest iPhones, including good wide color gamut performance, high contrast and dynamic range, and local dimming for truer blacks.

Kuo has also previously said that future iPad and MacBook displays will each use approximately 10,000 LEDs, compared to 576 in Apple’s upcoming Pro Display XDR. Each LED would be below 200 microns in size.

Apple is widely rumored to refresh the iPad Pro in spring 2020, and if so, a new 12.9-inch model in fall 2020 would certainly be soon after.

Tim Cook and Other CEOs Urge U.S. Government to Stay in Paris Agreement to Fight Climate Change

Apple CEO Tim Cook and a group of other CEOs, including Google’s Sundar Pichai and Microsoft’s Satya Nadella, have jointly signed a letter urging the Trump administration to keep the United States a member of the Paris Agreement.

The Paris Agreement aims to combat climate change by keeping the global temperature rise this century well below 2ºC above pre-industrial levels. The United States was one of over 190 countries to pledge support for the Paris Agreement in 2015, under the Obama administration, but the Trump administration is in the process of formally exiting the agreement due to economic concerns.

Cook and the other CEOs who signed the letter believe the Paris Agreement could actually provide a boost to the economy.

“Staying in the Paris Agreement will strengthen our competitiveness in global markets, positioning the United States to lead the deployment of new technologies that support the transition, provide for our workers and communities, and create jobs and companies built to last,” the letter states.

“The promise of the Paris Agreement is one of a just and prosperous world. We urge the United States to join us in staying in.”

The letter was prepared by AFL-CIO, the largest federation of unions in the United States, representing more than 12.5 million working people in the country. Visit the United For The Paris Agreement website for more details.

Apple Pay’s Tap-and-Go Express Transit Mode Now Live in London, Advertised on MetroCards in NYC

Last week, MacRumors reported that Apple Pay’s Express Transit mode was being tested at some London Underground stations. And now, Apple has formally announced that Express Transit mode is live across all Transport for London services, including the tube, buses, trains, and trams.

Apple has been alerting customers in the United Kingdom about this news by email, pointing them to a new page on its website with more details.

Express Transit mode eliminates the need to authenticate your payment with Face ID or Touch ID. And you don’t need to wake or unlock your device, either. Simply tap your iPhone or Apple Watch on the card reader and go. You’ll need an iPhone 6s and newer or an Apple Watch Series 1 or newer.

If you have an iPhone XS or newer, Express Transit mode even works for up to five hours after your iPhone shuts off and displays a red battery icon.

To set up a card for use with Express Transit mode, open the Settings app on your iPhone and tap Wallet & Apple Pay > Express Transit Card. Select a card and then authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode.

In related news, Apple has started advertising Apple Pay with Express Transit mode on some MetroCard fare cards in New York City, as shared on Reddit. The MTA added support for the feature earlier this year. Express Transit mode is also supported in Portland, Beijing, Shanghai, and parts of Japan.

Cyber Monday 2019: Get $10 Off Your First Year of Disney+ at $59.99 (Regular $69.99)

Disney is celebrating Cyber Monday this year with a notable new discount on its streaming service Disney+. New subscribers can get their first year of Disney+ for $59.99, down from an original price of $69.99. That’s $10 off for your first year of Disney+, and if you decide to re-subscribe after that first year, your subscription will go back up to the traditional $69.99/year price.

Note: MacRumors is an affiliate partner with Disney. When you click a link and make a purchase, we may receive a small payment, which helps us keep the site running.

Although Disney offered a special three-year discount on Disney+ for anyone with a free D23 account, the offer was limited and many missed out on it. Today’s deal marks the first major sale on Disney+ after its launch and is definitely worth looking into for anyone who hasn’t yet signed up for an annual subscription (or only signed up for the monthly subscription at $6.99/month).

To get the offer, simply head over to DisneyPlus.com to find the annual subscription discount. Disney notes that this is a limited time offer and it will expire later tonight. It’s only available in the United States and Puerto Rico, and it does not include a free trial of Disney+.

Deals: Save $300 on the 2019 MacBook Air, Now Just $799 on Amazon [Expired]

Amazon is offering an impressive deal on the 2019 MacBook Air, offering the base model for just $799 in the United States. That’s the lowest price we’ve ever seen and $300 less than Apple’s regular price of $1,099.

The notebook is listed at $899, but if you proceed to checkout and choose no-rush shipping, the price becomes $799.

This is the latest MacBook Air model with a True Tone display, released in July 2019.

The notebook features 8th-generation Intel Core processors, Touch ID, two Thunderbolt 3 ports, the Apple T2 chip with Hey Siri support, louder speakers, and more. Note that, unlike the new 16-inch MacBook Pro, the latest MacBook Air still has a butterfly keyboard that may experience issues with sticky or nonfunctioning keys.

The base model is configured with a 1.6GHz dual-core Core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM, a 128GB SSD, and Intel UHD Graphics 617.

Starting on Black Friday, a slightly better deal will be available at Micro Center stores for those who live near one of their 25 locations. They’ll be offering the 2019 MacBook Air for just $779 for in-store pickup only, but quantities will be limited.

MacRumors Giveaway: Win a USB-C Stand and Hub for Mac Mini From Satechi

For this week’s giveaway, we’ve teamed up Satechi to offer MacRumors readers a chance to win one of the company’s brand new Type-C Aluminum Stand and Hubs, designed for the latest Mac mini models.

Priced at $80, the ‌Mac mini‌ Stand and Hub is designed to be used under the ‌Mac mini‌, adding valuable additional ports that are normally not available on the ‌Mac mini‌.

The hub features a USB-C data port, three USB-A ports, a micro SD card reader, an SD card reader, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The ‌Mac mini‌ is already equipped with four Thunderbolt 3 ports, an Ethernet port, and an HDMI port, so Satechi’s hub basically adds support for using USB-A accessories and SD cards.

As with all of Satechi’s Mac accessories, the Type-C Aluminum Stand and Hub is made from an aluminum that’s designed to match the finish of Apple products, in this case, the ‌Mac mini‌. The ports are designed to be at the front of the ‌Mac mini‌, making them easily accessible.

There are built-in air vents that are designed to help regulate temperature and encourage airflow, as the Stand and Hub sits right under the ‌Mac mini‌. The stand is thin and it fits in well with the ‌Mac mini‌’s design, looking more like an additional component than an accessory.

We have five of Satechi’s Type-C Aluminum Stand and Hubs to give away to MacRumors readers. To enter to win our ‌‌giveaway‌‌, use the Gleam.io widget below and enter an email address. Email addresses will be used solely for contact purposes to reach the winners and send the prizes. You can earn additional entries by subscribing to our weekly newsletter, subscribing to our YouTube channel, following us on Twitter, following us on Instagram, or visiting the MacRumors Facebook page.

Due to the complexities of international laws regarding giveaways, only U.S. residents who are 18 years or older and Canadian residents (excluding Quebec) who have reached the age of majority in their province or territory are eligible to enter. To offer feedback or get more information on the ‌giveaway‌ restrictions, please refer to our Site Feedback section, as that is where discussion of the rules will be redirected.

Satechi

The contest will run from today (November 29) at 11:00 a.m. Pacific Time through 11:00 a.m. Pacific Time on December 6. The winners will be chosen randomly on December 6 and will be contacted by email. The winners will have 48 hours to respond and provide a shipping address before new winners are chosen.
